A Work in Progress

Kellman 7th Grade Violence Project

If you ask the students, most think they finished up last Friday or that they only have a few more changes to make to their videos.  If you look at their videos, you will understand we have a lot more work to do.

I have been very hands off this year as they make their vision become a reality.  My artist, Amir, has made sure they have had a chance to film like the professionals.  We have made sure they state their plan each time they film a scene and that they film scenes from a variety of angles.  So far we have left it up to them to edit because we thought they understood at the beginning what they wanted.  The problem is that as they film, they have changed their vision.

The solution is that we are going to let them all experience these works in progress and make comments on each other's videos.  I have set up our class wiki.  Each group has a page where I have placed a picture and their original story board.  The students all made comments this week about what they want on the wiki on our classroom blog page.  They all want to see what everyone is doing.  As I type this, their videos are being downloaded on Vimeo and will be on the wiki for them to see during our next computer class.

The students really like the idea of putting up their work on a wiki for anyone to see.  This surprised me a little, but it shows how proud they are of their work.  I also think they just want everyone to see their fight scenes. If you want to check out the wiki page, just follow the link:

  1. Maureen I love the honesty in your posts. Most students think that they can record everything perfectly in one take and are done! It's a difficult concept for them to grasp that a one 1-minute video could potentially take 5 hours to create!
The wiki is a great idea. I liked how you not only had pictures of the students but their story boards posted as well. It helps to keep them accountable to what they had originally planned and it allows other students to see there is thought behind each scene. I look forward to watching the videos (and their fight scenes).
