The Makings of War: Necessary or Not?

The students are to have a definitive answer for the question, "Is War a Necessary Evil?" by the end of our project.  Citizens are more informed than ever about the decisions being made by our government. It is important that the students become active citizens with the ability to decipher their world through facts. We've taken on 2 wars so far this semester, and the debate has been lively to say the least. Already, the American Revolution and the Civil War has the class divided, and we still have 4 more wars to learn about. The students understand the freedoms that war can afford, but they are conflicted about the casualties, deaths, and lack of alternatives that in some cases has further divided the two sides.  The students were ask to choose words that would best describe their feelings about war or a specific war. Using the internet software Wordle the students used words, fonts, and colors as a way of telling their opinion. I was able to upload pictures of the completed Wordles by using Picasa.

  1. Danyele, how did your students choose their words? I'd also be interested in hearing their "artist statements" about their choices behind the fonts, color schemes, and layouts. Is this a stand-alone assignment, or will they be using these in another way? Thanks!

  2. Danyele I love Wordle! I've also seen speeches (or you could find some historical summaries about the wars you've covered or will cover) that have been placed in Wordle and then "deconstructed" by the students. For example, you could find a couple of different write-ups about World War 1 and have groups put them into Wordle and see what "themes" seem prevalent. So many possibilities!
